Tesla Cybertruck: home backup that's here now

Unlike most trucks on this site, the Cybertruck can already power a house. Tesla calls it Powershare.

Why it matters

Most trucks on this site have announced home backup. The Cybertruck has it, and Tesla keeps expanding it. A 123 kWh battery is one of the biggest in any pickup, which means more days on the house when the grid goes down.

What it can carry in an outage

The average home uses about 29 kWh a day (U.S. Energy Information Administration, 2024). A full Cybertruck covers roughly three to four days of normal living and well over a week on essentials — fridge, freezer, well pump, lights, fans and internet. Tesla says Powershare adds more than three days of backup.

Where the solar carport comes in

Without solar, home backup is a countdown. Under a heavy-timber carport with a solar roof built to keep working through an outage, sunny days add around 30 kWh back. Day to day, the same roof covers roughly 60 to 75 miles of driving.

Two trucks, one roof

A Bugging Out carport is sized for two full-size trucks side by side. A Cybertruck next to a Scout or a Ram 1500 REV means two big batteries on one roof, and a house that rides out the storm.

Coast note: salt air and sand are hard on any truck. Rinse the underbody with fresh water after every beach day, and keep it under cover at home.

Cybertruck questions

Can a Cybertruck power a house?

Yes. Tesla calls it Powershare. With a Tesla Universal Wall Connector and a Powershare Gateway installed at the house, the Cybertruck can back up the home at up to 11.5 kW.

Does Powershare work with a Powerwall?

As of September 2026, yes. Tesla updated Powershare so a Cybertruck can back up a home at the same time as a Powerwall 3, where before owners had to choose one or the other.

How long can a Cybertruck run a house?

The Cybertruck carries a 123 kWh battery. With the average home using about 29 kWh a day, that's around three to four days of normal living, and longer on essentials. Tesla says Powershare adds more than three days of backup.

Does it need a solar carport?

No, but it's a strong match. Without solar, backup is a countdown. With a solar roof built to keep working during an outage, sunny days refill the truck while the grid is down.
