Ford F-150 Lightning: the proof it works
The Lightning is the truck that showed the idea works in real houses, and there are plenty of them on the road. Ford says an extended-range Lightning (131 kWh battery) can run an average home for about three days, based on 30 kWh a day, and up to about ten days with rationing or solar help. With Ford's 80-amp Charge Station Pro it can deliver up to 9.6 kW to the house.
Scout Traveler and Terra: built for it from day one
Scout Motors announced bidirectional charging for both trucks at their reveal. The Harvester range-extended version adds a small gas generator that recharges the battery — useful when the outage drags on and you need to drive. Full Scout page →
Rivian: R2 first, R1 to follow
Rivian has said the R2 will support vehicle-to-home, with the two-way hardware built into the vehicle. For the R1T and R1S, Rivian announced a bidirectional home charger that has been delayed.
Coming soon: the watch list
These have announced or hinted at home backup but aren't ready yet. We'll update this list as they arrive.
- Rivian R1T and R1S: Rivian's two-way home charger has been delayed. The R2 is announced with vehicle-to-home built in.
- Ford's next Lightning: Ford's range-extended successor is coming. Ford's current GenerLink home kit, used with Pro Power Onboard trucks, sends power one way only, from truck to house.
- Hyundai Ioniq 9: the hardware is there, but home backup isn't switched on yet in the U.S.
- Jeep Recon: an electric Jeep 4x4; home backup not confirmed.
Also available now outside the truck world: the Kia EV9 SUV backs up a home with the Wallbox Quasar 2 charger.
What every setup needs
- A vehicle that supports two-way power.
- The maker's approved two-way charger or home kit.
- A transfer switch installed by a licensed electrician.
- A solar roof, if you want the vehicle to refill itself while the grid is down.
