GM electric trucks: the biggest batteries in a pickup
Chevy Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV and GMC Hummer EV can power a house today with GM's home kit.
The trucks
| Truck | Range (GM / EPA estimate) | Towing |
|---|---|---|
| Chevrolet Silverado EV | Up to 493 miles (Work Truck Max Range); up to 478 miles (Trail Boss Max Range) | Up to 12,500 lb (Extended Range versions) |
| GMC Sierra EV | Up to 478 miles (AT4 and Denali Max Range) | Up to 12,500 lb (Elevation and Denali Extended Range) |
| GMC Hummer EV pickup | About 316 miles, up to 363 miles on the 3X with the largest pack | Varies by version |
| GMC Hummer EV SUV | Up to 319 miles (2X) | Varies by version |

Why they matter for home backup
GM's largest truck battery holds about 200 kWh usable, among the biggest in any vehicle on sale. That's about 60 percent more than a Cybertruck or an extended-range F-150 Lightning. More battery means more days on the house when the grid goes down.
What the house needs

GM sells the home side as the GM Energy V2H Bundle:
- PowerShift charger: a two-way (bidirectional) wall charger, up to 19.2 kW for charging.
- V2H Enablement Kit: a home hub (the switch that separates the house from the grid, up to 200-amp service), an inverter rated at 9.6 kW, and a small startup battery that wakes the system in a blackout.
- Installation by an electrician, with a permit. GM recommends its own preferred installers.
At launch GM priced the full bundle at $7,299 before installation. GM runs frequent discounts, so check current pricing.
What it can carry in an outage
The average home uses about 29 kWh a day (U.S. Energy Information Administration, 2024). A full 200 kWh pack covers roughly a week of normal living, and two to three weeks on essentials — fridge, freezer, well pump, lights, fans and internet. GM says up to 21 days.
Where the solar carport comes in
Without solar, home backup is a countdown, even with a huge battery. Under a heavy-timber carport with a solar roof built to keep working through an outage, sunny days add around 30 kWh back. Day to day, the same roof covers roughly 60 to 75 miles of driving.
Two trucks, one roof

A Bugging Out carport is sized for two full-size trucks side by side. A Silverado EV next to a Scout means the biggest battery and the newest one under the same roof.
GM truck questions
Can a Silverado EV power a house?
Yes. GM lists the 2026 Silverado EV as vehicle-to-home capable with the GM Energy V2H Bundle: a PowerShift bidirectional charger plus a V2H Enablement Kit (home hub, inverter and a small startup battery).
Which GM trucks can back up a home?
GM lists the 2026 Chevrolet Silverado EV, 2026 GMC Sierra EV, and the 2026 GMC Hummer EV pickup and SUV, along with several GM SUVs. Check GM Energy for your exact model and year.
How long can a Silverado EV run a house?
The biggest pack holds about 200 kWh usable. At the U.S. average of about 29 kWh a day, that's roughly a week of normal living and much longer on essentials. GM says up to 21 days, which assumes light use.
How much power does it send to the house?
GM Energy lists the V2H inverter at 9.6 kW. That runs most of a house, but very large loads at once (heat strips, a dryer and an oven together) may need to be staggered.
Does it need a solar carport?
No, but it pairs well. Without solar, backup is a countdown. With a solar roof built to keep working during an outage, sunny days refill the truck while the grid is down.
